What Kind Of Bystander Are You?

A bystander is anyone who can attempt to prevent or intervene before, during, or after an act of violence. Here are some things a bystander can do:
  • Speak out about sexism and sexual violence.
  • Talk to your children about technology and how it can be used to foster abusive behavior and exploit people. For example, if they were the recipient of sexting, what would they do? Or what would they do if someone they don’t know contacts them in a chat room or asks your child to meet them somewhere?
  • Encourage men to challenge each other on how they talk about and treat women – from sexist jokes, to unwanted sexual activity, to domestic violence.
  • Give support and options to a child who is being bullied.
  • When going out, agree ahead of time with your friends to leave together to ensure that everyone gets home safely.
  • If you see something going on that you think is not right, ask yourself, “If I were in this situation, would I want someone to help me?”
  • Trust your instincts and don’t wait for someone else to act. If a situation makes you feel uncomfortable it’s usually a good indicator that something is not right. Don’t doubt yourself. It’s better to be wrong than to do nothing.
  • Don’t put yourself in danger. If it is not safe to intervene yourself, call for help and/or call 911.
