What Guys Can Do To Help Prevent Assault

While a perpetrator can be be either male or female, the majority of those who commit sexual assaults are men. But that doesn’t mean that all men are rapists. In fact, most are not. If you’re a man who wants to help prevent sexual assault, here are some things you can do.

  • Speak out about sexism and sexual assault.
  • Encourage men to challenge each other on how they talk about and treat women.
  • Don’t be afraid to say that you don’t appreciate hearing jokes about rape.
  • If you see someone who may be in danger of being assaulted, and if it’s safe, step in and ask if the person needs help.
  • But if it means putting yourself in danger, call 911 instead. Don’t leave. If you stay and can be a witness, the perpetrator is less likely to do anything. If you know the perpetrator, tell him that you don’t approve of what he is doing and ask him to stop.
  • Become knowledgeable about the issue and share your knowledge with others.
  • Volunteer at your local rape crisis center to help educate your community about preventing sexual violence.
