What To Do If You Are Being Abused?

  1. Call the police if you are in danger, and seek medical attention if you are hurt.
  2. Call Safe Shelter at 701-251-2300, or toll free 888-353-7233 (SAFE).
  3. Talk with someone you trust – a friend or relative, someone from your job or church, your health care provider.

Plan Ahead

Safe Shelter can help you develop a “Safety Plan” but, at the least, you should talk to your children and think about the following:

  • The safest room in your house, one that has a phone so you can call 911.
  • A list of people your children can call in an emergency.
  • The fastest route out of your house.
  • A list of people you can count on for shelter or transportation.
  • A place where you can keep an extra set of car keys, some cash and other things you might need immediately such as identification, medication, etc.

TRUST YOUR INSTINCTS! If you feel you may be in danger, get away.
